in 1881, the Atlanta washerwoman strike was called by a group of ~20 Black women who had come together as the Washing Society to call for better pay and job rights. Over the next three weeks, they grew to 3,000 members, and not only did they have some real success having their demands met, they sparked actions by workers in other low-wage service industries – cooks, maids, nurses, etc.
