To James and June
Today…
in 1994, an anti-abortion extremist shot and killed provider Dr. John Britton, as well as 74-year-old Air Force veteran James Barrett – whose wife June, a retired RN and Public Health Service captain, was also shot but survived. The Barretts had been volunteering as clinic escorts for almost two years and were active with a local HIV/AIDs organization and PFLAG.
I love this picture so much. It feels like a $20 in my hand, with instructions to get my oil changed – it’s not enough, of course, but guarantee she’s going to slip me $40 more and a baggie full of cookies as I leave. It feels like “No, honey, your father and I are fine, you kids have fun” but get a few more of those Sloe Gin Fizzes in ‘em and he’s polkaing her all over that dance floor.
