Tea for Tuesday
Today… could be the birthday of Hattie Sewell, but thing is, she was a Black woman born in the U.S. in 1883 so Google was giving me only so much. What I do know: In 1920, Hattie was awarded the contract to run the teahouse that was then housed at Pierce Mill in Rock Creek Park, and by all accounts increased the business by 200% in just a year.
But just a year, because “a prominent neighbor, E.S. Newman, complained that Pierce Mill had become ‘a rendezvous for colored people, soon developing into a nuisance,’” leading to her contract being terminated in 1921. You sonofabitch.
However! By the following fall, she’s running the Balfour Cafe at 16th & U, where was she famous for her country fried chicken and waffles yes please.
At Howard, they’ve been digging into her story for an upcoming documentary, and there’s a move to rename one of the trails that goes to Pierce Mill for her.
