Story time
Apologies in advance, I finished early this morning so I have time for a short story.
Today is the anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. My kids were 5 and 3 at the time. It was a Friday and there was no school, so we were at Stead Park. Kids are running around, I’m scrolling Twitter on my phone and as the news breaks, I can tell on their faces when every other parent has seen it. Not a word, we just meet eyes like “you’re seeing this, right?” and we’re wrecked.
We’re already in Dupont Circle, so I run us down to a vigil at the White House. Mostly I want to be sad and angry with other sad, angry people, and a little bit I want to show my children. Babies. Like these. Look at them. Fucking do something.
But now, listen. Even in moments like this, I can’t get the work hat all the way off. I see us: mother with young boy who looks every bit like those children. I know cameraman sees us, too: I’m holding Joe, we’re holding candles, and we are sad. Every time he looks at me, cameraman goes snapsnapsnapsnapsnap. “Sweetheart. Get the stick out of your mouth. You want to hold the candle?” Snapsnapsnapsnapsnap. “Hug?” Snapsnapsnapsnapsnap.
I could maybe have been sad with a little lip color, but what can you do.
