"Out of the mainstream, into the revolution."
Today…
is the birthday of NOW founding member Kathryn Clarenbach (1920–1994). You know, before posting about a second-wave libber, I always do a quick check to see if she was a raving TERF. (With white suffragettes, I check for racism. By the ‘60s/’70s, they’ve typically stopped saying that shit out loud.) But Clarenbach did me one better:
”Alarmed at the potential damage that alignment with lesbians could bring to the feminist movement, she argued it would be ‘a disastrous blunder’ to support women's sexual freedom.”** Oh, Kay. I read elsewhere that she softened somewhat over the years, buuuut…is “Inner Beauty Day,” which was apparently not invented in the last year to make us feel better about looking/feeling/smelling like sacks of shit.
“But you’re beautiful… *gag*… on the inside.”
**And she would go on to found the Law Center I kid! Almost entirely kidding! That’s for the batch of brand-new subscribers from NWLC, who I imagine know little of its #YouToo era pre-FGG, and I’m very glad for that.
