Of cabbages and queens
Today…
is National Cabbage Day, a little-marked occasion here in Casa di Perrone, because children. (“What do you mean, my child just adores cabbage.” I’m very glad for you, shhhh.) Such a shame, too, because I’m finally at an age when I can make a decent cabbage roll. It was one of those dishes I would try to get Big Nana to explain, but you know there was no recipe and her instructions included a lot of, “Cook it ‘til it’s done.” How much rice to add? “You know…” I don’t though, that’s why I’m asking. “‘til it looks right. You don’t need a lot.” Mine never turned out quite like hers and my mother suggested that the problem wasn’t me, just my age. I would get it right when I was older. I certainly feel older.
