Not all that saved
Today…
is National Girls and Women in Sports Day. You’ll have to talk to my sister about that one. She played every sport they offered. I was the one who did the newspaper, yearbook, band, Odyssey of the Mind… why, no, I wasn’t especially popular, how did you know.
I was listening to Keep It as I pulled the headlines this morning, and in the segment on Cloris Leachman’s recent passing they talked about a favorite episode of Mary Tyler Moore, “My Brother’s Keeper” that is as delightful as ever.
Phyllis’s brother Ben is coming to town, and she really wants to set him up with Mary.
Phyllis: From the moment you moved into our building, I was thinking to myself, ‘Ben would love Mary.’ And then, of course, you’re both unmarried. It seems as though you’ve been saved for one another.
Mary: Well Phyll… I’m not all that saved.
(Remember, our thoroughly modern Mary is on the pill.)
But of course he and Rhoda are taken with one another! Look at her! She’s marvelous! That aside, I appreciate how Ben’s gayness is not A Thing. He’s not outrageous or tragic, he just is.
Rhoda: Ben and I are aren’t getting married. He’s not my type.
Phyllis: What do you mean, not your type? He’s witty, he’s attractive, he’s successful, he’s single–
Rhoda: He’s gay! I thought you knew. We’re not getting married.
Phyllis: I’m so relieved!
