Today…
is Working Parents Day, but really, isn’t every day…
is Yom Kippur. Quick story: many, many years ago, I clicked the little box to add Jewish holidays to my Outlook calendar. Now, if you needed to keep track of Christian holidays for work, you really only need Christmas, Easter… maybe Ash Wednesday, just to avoid asking any awkward questions. This is what I thought I was getting. No. This calendar has everything. E.ver.y.thing. It’s like the calendars we used to get from St. Anthony’s, that included every single saint’s day. It has the Arbor Day of Jewish holidays, plus of course Erev Arbor Day. What’s more, it exported – not synced, and not as recurring events – to Google, so they’re with me forever. Did you know that next week is Sukkot, followed by six days of Chol Hamoed, then Shmini Atzeret? I do.

I will never forget, ‘bout five years ago, watching a panel on anti-choice clinic protests in North Carolina, one of the attendees worked for the city and talked about the public meetings for building permits. He said yes, they are dry, they are in the weeds, they are not big activist fun like a rally. But. You know who comes? The abortion opponents. He said a clinic doesn’t so much as replace a window without them knowing.
