Today…
is the birthday of Edith Clarke (1883-1959), the first woman in the U.S. to be professionally employed as an electrical engineer, to be a professor of electrical engineering, to be named a fellow at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, and on and on and on. She’s known for developing the mathematical methods – and a graphing calculator – that made it faster and easier for engineers to understand long power lines, and her work is considered a precursor to “smart grid” technology.
