I'll be your spicy potato
Today…
is National Hot & Spicy Food Day and National Potato Day brb Googling recipes. Batata harra. Done.
is the birthday of Vera Buch Weisbord (1895-1987), labor activist and “an early voice for women’s rights in the workplace.” And sidenote, apparently not one to have her picture taken, maybe because 1930s union organizing, because she was a radical trying to stay off the radar, I don’t know, but wow this took a minute to find.
You know, I don’t inflate the importance of anything I’m doing here, but every once in a while it does strike me how these women’s stories fade over time. If the 100some of you who open this every day spend a moment to think on women like Vera Buch, who busted her ass for poorer-than-poor textile workers in the rural South, who endured an unanesthetized abortion, miscarriage for the sake a lousy man – she may have loved him, but I ain’t have to – well, then, I’ve accomplished something today.
Now if I can just get the kids to finish unpacking their bedrooms, I’ll really be winning.
