in 1892, Nance Legins-Costley, (born Nance Legins Cox, c. 1813) died in Peoria, Illinois. I don’t even know where to begin with her story. You just have to read it. You really do. She was the first Black person freed by Lincoln, long before his presidency. Her grave was paved over and her story hardly known.
