in 1903, the U.S. Patent Office granted a patent to Mary Anderson for her windshield wiper design. Though other designs had been developed, hers was the first that actually worked. Mary was unable to sell her design – told that it had no practical value, or worse, would distract the driver and cause accidents – and her patent expired before wipers became widely used.
