Don't you fret
Today…
is National Homemade Soup Day, not at all a bad idea given this rain. (And I know, ice and snow and much cold weather nastiness elsewhere.)
Relevant to nothing, but the rain and my solipsism reminded of a Rachel Classic, and I have time, so here we go. When the kids were maybe 2 and 4, I had them in summer camp at Rose Park in Georgetown. My office was right on Dupont Circle and we lived in Adams Morgan. I’d load them in the bike trailer, our primary form of transportation, and we’d hightail it back and forth on Rock Creek Trail.
Anyway, we were having one of those steamy hot weeks that feature a summer storm every afternoon. I knew I was taking a risk, but there was a big break in the rain, and I thought I make it – I could pick them up and get us home before the next rain rolled through.
I. was. wrong. Oh my God. Got the kids loaded up, rain cover secured, and within minutes of hitting the bike trail, the skies opened. I mean, pouring. And at this point, there was nothing to be done. The only way out is through. At least it was a warm rain.
So I’m peddling along, fast as I can, and I heard the kids yelling for me – could barely hear them over the rain pounding on my helmet.
Them: Mama! Mama! Mamaaaaa!
Me [peddling, panting, soaked to my very soul]: Yes… honey… what is it.
Them: There’s a drip! Mama! There’s a drip!
I look back, could barely see them because I’m riding a bike through Niagra Falls with glasses on, and they’ve got their little hands out, catching this drip coming through the rain cover. I know I said something like, “Oh, I’m sorry honey, I can’t fix it right now, just hang in there,” but you know in my head…
There’s a drip. I’m wringing out my bra as soon as we get home but you got a drip, if you don’t…
