Just after we moved into the old apartment, I was outside one day trying unsuccessfully to get some screens on my windows when the building super came by. Mr. Rudy was late 70s, Jamaican with a thick accent, had been with the building 50 years. He was generally good to us, but could also be such a fussy old man. Anyway.
He asked what I was up to – ‘cause you didn’t make a move without Mr. Rudy knowing about it – and I told him, you know, just trying to get some air through the apartment. He paused, shook his head and said, “Mm. White people always want a breeze.” I just blinked. But lemme tell you, I have hardly opened a window since then without remembering that. Turn on a fan anywhere near me and I think, “See? Always with that breeze. My man was right.”
So naturally, I’m thinking of Mr. Rudy today as I write from my new open air office.
