in 1972, Supreme Court ruled in Eisenstadt v Baird that single people have the same rights as married people when it comes to using birth control.
in 1976, the New Jersey Superior Court issued a ruling in M.T. v J.T., considered the first legal case specifically addressing the marriage rights of a trans person. The gist of it was that the court recognized MT, a trans a woman, as a woman in the framework of her divorce from JT. The language of the case is all very, um, of its time, but nonetheless a step forward.
