An entity to be reckoned
Today…
is the birthday of Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906). Also on February 15, 1921, the Portrait Monument was unveiled – a statue of Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, with the inscription “Woman first denied a soul, then called mindless, now arisen, declaring herself an entity to be reckoned.” It was hauled away the very next day, Congress ordered the inscription to be scraped off, and the statute sat in storage until 1997. It’s an aggravating story but a worthwhile read.
