An entity to be reckoned
Today…
in 1921, the Portrait Monument, commemorating Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony (and marking her SBA's birthday (1820-1906)) was unveiled in the Capitol Rotunda.
On February 16, 1921, the statue was hauled off to a storage room, and by order of Congress its “blasphemous'“ feminist inscription was scraped off:
“Woman, first denied a soul, then called mindless, now arisen, declared herself an entity to be reckoned.”
The Portrait Monument was finally brought out of storage in 1997, thanks in large part to Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who as recently as last year was still trying to pass a resolution to get the inscription restored.
