Today… is the birthday of Pearl Bailey (1918-1990), legendary singer, actress, and – let’s see if my friend Stacy reads this – “passionate fan of the New York Mets.” In 1976, she became the first Black actor to receive the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award.

Pearl Bailey

Yes, she has albums full of other songs I enjoy. Yes, this remains my go-to, I don’t care, it speaks to my soul.

Think I’ll go a psychiatrist, one of them rich people doctors, you know?
And I guess he’ll tell me a lot of big words… all about psychiatrics, metaphysics, and…
a whole lot of stuff I don’t understand…
Wonder how much he’ll charge me for that.
Whatever he charges he’ll probably end up saying the same thing:
“Pearl. You’re just tired.”

This weekend, I had the honor of seeing the nation’s 1st monument honoring the Mother’s of Gynecology: Anarcha, Betsey and Lucy - three enslaved Black women who didn’t receive anesthesia as their bodies were used as experiments by the “Father of Gynecology,” J. Marion Sims.
