A spoilswoman of the deepest dye
Today… is the birthday of Susanna Kinsey Salter (1860–1961), who was elected and became the first woman to serve as mayor in the U.S.
It’s a good story: her name had been put on the Argonia, Kansas ballot by a group of men who were trying to humiliate her and the very idea of women in politics. She’ll lose in a landslide, of course. Surprise! She won with more than 60% of the vote.
We should be so lucky.
