A cause for celebration
Today…
in 1965, Patsy Mink was sworn in as the first Asian American woman and first woman of color to serve in Congress. Rep. Mink of Hawaii fought for gender and racial equality, affordable childcare, bilingual education and Title IX.
in 2007, Nancy Pelosi became the first woman Speaker of the House.
A hundred years ago, I worked for an Ohio state senator who represented Dayton, so part of her district overlapped Boehner’s. And you know, people have no idea who does what, so we’d often get calls from constituents needing help with Social Security and other federal issues that weren’t really in our purview. I could pass ‘em along to their MoC. But. If they were Boehner’s, may as well take their information and call Social Security because his office was the worst. Zero helpful.
“I feel a ‘but’ coming. Get to the point.” I liked his remarks ahead of handing over the gavel. Didn’t love it, man’s still a Republican, but I liked it and was glad for it. “My fellow Americans, whether you are a Republican, a Democrat, or an Independent, today is a cause for celebration.” Lord knows you don’t many of them talk like this anymore: “Sometimes what people call partisanship is really a deep disagreement over a means to a shared goal, and we should welcome that conversation, encourage it, enjoy it, and be nice about it.”Nancy D'Alesandro Pelosi would appreciate, is National Spaghetti Day. I can get into some pastina, some fuckin’ ziti, a bowl of ravioli like there’s an envelope of cash waiting for me at the bottom, but there is nothing like regular. old. spaghetti. My favorite.
